Amblyopia, also known as lazy eye, is a condition of the eye characterized by reduced vision in one or both eyes. This occurs due to improper development of the visual system in childhood.
The main cause of amblyopia is improper development of the visual system in childhood, as well as due to disturbance of the transparency of the optical media.
Diagnosis of amblyopia is performed using vision tests, as well as examination of the fundus of the eye and measurement of intraocular pressure.
Treatment of amblyopia includes wearing special glasses, orthoptic exercises, and in some cases may require surgical intervention.
Prevention of amblyopia involves timely referral to an ophthalmologist for children and regular vision tests.
Treatment and diagnosis of amblyopia are carried out by an ophthalmologist-orthoptist.
