What is Ascariasis?

Ascariasis is a parasitic disease caused by roundworms-ascaris. They inhabit the human small intestine and can cause various symptoms and complications.

Symptoms

• Abdominal pain
• Nausea and vomiting
• Fever
• Diarrhea or constipation
• Cough

Causes

Infection occurs through the consumption of food or water contaminated with ascaris eggs. This most often occurs in countries with poor sanitary and hygienic conditions, but accidental infection is also possible in regions with developed infrastructure.

Diagnosis

Stool and blood tests are used for the diagnosis of ascariasis, as well as instrumental methods such as X-ray examination.

Treatment

Treatment of ascariasis is carried out using antiparasitic drugs and symptomatic therapy. In some cases, surgical intervention may be required to remove the worms.

• Observance of hygiene rules when consuming food and water
• Conducting deworming
• Use of filters for water purification
