What is Atrophic Rhinitis?

Description of the disease

Atrophic rhinitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the nasal mucosa, characterized by gradual tissue destruction and decrease in their volume.

Classification

Atrophic rhinitis is divided into primary (idiopathic) and secondary (occurring against the background of other diseases).

Symptoms

  • constant nasal congestion
  • mucous discharge from the nose with the addition of purulent discharge
  • olfactory disturbances
  • dryness and crusts in the nose
  • frequent nosebleeds

Causes

The main causes of atrophic rhinitis are chronic inflammatory processes in the nose, circulatory disorders, mechanical damage to the nasal mucosa.

Diagnostics

To diagnose atrophic rhinitis, rhinoscopy, X-ray of the nose, bacteriological examinations of nasal secretions are performed.

Treatment

Treatment of atrophic rhinitis includes the use of local antiseptic preparations, moisturizing the nasal mucosa, and treatment of concomitant diseases.

Prevention

To prevent atrophic rhinitis, it is recommended to avoid hypothermia, maintain humidity in the room, and timely treat colds and other upper respiratory tract diseases.
