What is Gastric Bezoar?

Description of the disease:

Gastric bezoar is a formation in the stomach, usually consisting of hair or other undigested materials, which can cause blockage of the esophagus or other digestive problems.

Classification:

  • Trichobezoar - formation of hair
  • Phytobezoar - formation of vegetable materials
  • Lactobezoar - formation of milk

Symptoms:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Lack of appetite
  • Diarrhea

Causes:

Bezoars are usually associated with mental disorders, such as trichophagia (compulsive hair eating) or eating disorders.

Diagnosis:

X-rays, ultrasound, or endoscopy are usually performed to detect bezoar.

Treatment:

Treatment usually involves surgical removal of bezoars, as well as psychotherapy to treat the underlying mental disorder.

Prevention:

Avoid eating hair or other undigested materials, get timely treatment for mental disorders.
