What is Perthes Disease?

Description of the disease

Perthes disease (or osteochondrosis) is a joint disease caused by impaired blood supply to the bones. This leads to a disruption of the nourishment of the cartilage tissue and joint deformities.

Classification

  • Perthes disease first degree - initial stage, characterized by small defects in the cartilage;
  • Perthes disease second degree - deepening of the cartilage tissue and formation of bone protrusions;
  • Perthes disease third degree - destruction of the cartilage tissue and formation of loose bodies;
  • Perthes disease fourth degree - formation of bone growths and joint deformation.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the joint;
  • Swelling and redness of the skin in the affected joint area;
  • Limitation of movements;
  • Crackling and grinding in the joint during movement;
  • Weakness in the affected joint area.

Causes

The main causes of Perthes disease development are: impaired blood circulation, injuries, genetic predisposition, and past infectious diseases.

Diagnosis

To diagnose Perthes disease, X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging, and arthroscopy are performed.

Treatment

Treatment of Perthes disease may include the use of anti-inflammatory drugs, physiotherapy, massage, physical exercises, and in severe cases - surgical intervention.

  • Moderate physical activity;
  • Proper nutrition;
  • Avoiding traumatic loads on the joints.
