What is Dacryocystitis?

Description of the disease

Dacryocystitis is inflammation of the lacrimal sac, usually caused by blockage of the tear ducts. This condition can lead to swelling, pain, and redness around the eye, as well as discharge of pus from the tear duct.

• Acute dacryocystitis
• Chronic dacryocystitis

Symptoms

• Swelling around the inner corner of the eye
• Redness of the skin
• Pain
• Purulent or mucous discharge from the tear duct

Causes

The main causes of dacryocystitis include bacterial or viral infection, as well as anomalies or blockage of the tear ducts.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis usually includes a doctor's examination, sometimes dacryocystography and bacteriological examination of discharges are required.

Treatment

Treatment may include the use of antibiotics, massaging the tear duct, flushing the tear ducts, and in some cases, surgical intervention.

Prevention

Prevention includes eye care, timely treatment of inflammatory processes, and seeking medical attention at the first signs of problems with the tear ducts.
