Furunculosis is an acute purulent infection of the hair follicle and surrounding tissues. It is characterized by the formation of painful redness, swelling, and pus. Boil occurs when bacteria infect the hairy part of the skin.
Furunculosis is caused by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, which penetrates through damaged skin.
The diagnosis of furunculosis is usually based on physical examination and symptoms. If necessary, a bacteriological examination of secretions may be performed.
Treatment may include the use of antiseptics, local antibiotics, and, if necessary, surgical opening of the furuncle. A course of antibiotics may be prescribed in the case of recurrence or complications.
Furunculosis is treated by a dermatologist.
