What is Heartburn?

Description of the Disease:

Heartburn is a burning sensation behind the breastbone that may radiate upward toward the throat. It usually occurs after eating or lying down, especially when bending over.

Classification:

  • Functional heartburn
  • Pathological heartburn
  • Mixed heartburn

Symptoms:

  • Burning pain behind the breastbone
  • Acidic taste in the mouth
  • Excessive saliva

Causes:

  • Malfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter
  • Excessive acidity of gastric juice
  • Obesity

Diagnosis:

The diagnosis is based on the symptoms and the results of esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) or barium swallow.

Treatment:

Includes lifestyle changes, taking medications to reduce gastric acidity, and, if necessary, surgical intervention.

Prevention:

  • Avoid overeating
  • Avoid lying down immediately after eating
  • Avoid fatty, fried, and acidic foods
