Croup is a viral disease characterized by inflammation of the airways and the formation of mucous-purulent edema in the larynx. This condition can be dangerous, especially for young children.
Croup is caused by viruses, most commonly parainfluenza or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
The diagnosis of croup is based on clinical manifestations and a doctor's examination. Sometimes a chest X-ray may be required.
Treatment of croup may include steam inhalations, antiviral medications, and, in severe cases, oxygen therapy.
Croup is treated by an otolaryngologist.
