Otomycosis is a fungal infection of the external auditory canal. It is caused by various fungi such as Candida albicans, Aspergillus, and others. This condition can be caused by either a fungal infection or a mixed infection involving both fungi and bacteria.
The main cause of otomycosis is the moist environment of the external auditory canal, which creates favorable conditions for the growth of fungi and bacteria. Other causes include ear trauma, prolonged use of antibiotics, weakening of the immune system, and diseases such as diabetes.
Diagnosis of otomycosis involves examination by an otolaryngologist and taking a swab for laboratory tests. Sometimes a computed tomography may be needed to assess the condition of the external auditory canal and the eardrum.
Treatment of otomycosis includes the use of antifungal medications, local treatment with antiseptics, and antifungal ear drops. In some cases, removal of pus deposits from the ear may be necessary.
Otomycosis is treated by an otolaryngologist.
