What is Cervical Cancer?

Description of the disease

Cervical cancer is a malignant tumor that develops from cells of the cervix. It is most commonly caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and can lead to serious consequences if not detected and treated promptly.

  • Mixed-type cervical cancer

Symptoms

  • Abnormal bleeding outside of the menstrual cycle
  • Pelvic or lower back pain
  • Painful sexual intercourse

Causes

The main cause of cervical cancer is infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV), particularly high-risk types.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis includes cytological and histological studies, colposcopy, and biopsy.

Treatment

Treatment may involve surgical removal of the tumor, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or a combination of these, depending on the stage and characteristics of the cancer.

  • Vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Regular check-ups with a gynecologist
  • Preventing the risk of HPV infection
