Chronic tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils that lasts for more than 12 weeks and is characterized by periodic exacerbations. This is a problem that can seriously affect the patient's quality of life, causing various unpleasant symptoms.
Chronic tonsillitis can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection. Risk factors also include weakened immune system, poor nutrition, inadequate rest, and adverse environmental conditions.
To diagnose chronic tonsillitis, a doctor examines the throat, additional swab analysis from the tonsils may be prescribed.
Treatment may include taking antibiotics, rinsing the tonsils, physiotherapy. In case of frequent exacerbations, removal of the tonsils may be necessary.
