What is Thrombophlebitis?

Thrombophlebitis is the inflammation of the walls of the veins, accompanied by the formation of a thrombus inside the vessel. This condition often occurs in the lower extremities, but can also affect other parts of the body.

Symptoms of thrombophlebitis include pain, swelling, redness, and increased temperature at the site of inflammation.

Causes

The main causes of thrombophlebitis are disorders of blood flow, trauma, surgical interventions, pregnancy, infections, and coagulation disorders.

Diagnosis

Ultrasound examination, duplex scanning, and blood tests for the presence of thrombophilia are used to diagnose thrombophlebitis.

Treatment

Treatment of thrombophlebitis includes the use of anti-inflammatory drugs, anticoagulants, compression clothing, and in some cases, surgical intervention.

Prevention

Prevention of thrombophlebitis includes weight control, moderate physical activity, avoiding prolonged sitting or standing, and wearing compression clothing.
