The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a virus that belongs to the human herpesvirus group. It can cause a range of illnesses, from common cold symptoms to serious complications such as lymphoma and mononucleosis.
Infection occurs through airborne droplets, contact with infected saliva, or blood.
Diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms, as well as laboratory tests for the presence of antibodies to the virus.
There is no direct treatment for the Epstein-Barr virus, usually symptomatic measures are prescribed - rest, humidifying the air, antiviral drugs.
An infectious disease specialist is involved in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease, and a consultation with an otolaryngologist may also be required to assess the throat condition.
